The Internet
The internet is not going to touch my system!
I don't want any corruption with my data!
I hear this so often within Vetware Clinics.
And without the proper steps being taken, I agree with them
But...
The internet is a great source of Information
and it is very important to Vetware.
So... What are the proper safeguards?
Firewall Protection:
Windows has a firewall built into to it. This may be used, but it is not tremendously successful.
The most powerful and best firewall that you can place onto your system is a Hardware Firewall.
And the easiest one that you can install is your router.
This same hardware divice that physically splits the Internet signal and distributes it to all
of the computers of your network can protect your system from malicios harm.
Please ensure that you have set up your own passwords for the router,
and that you have enabled the wep encryption on the router. These procedures will protect
you should hackers come calling.
I would like to point out, that third party software firewall programs, are not a suitable
substitue for a hardware firewall. Even software like Norton Internet Securities, is not
very effective. In fact, it often causes more problems than it is worth, as it often locks
out your own computers with your local network.
Anti-Virus Software:
Now, we are talking about Norton Anti-Virus.
It is recommended that this software be loaded on every computer that talks to the Internet.
This will stop virus from loading onto your system during the course of your activities on the web.
Of course, there are also some decisions that you and your staff have to make while
operating on the net. When you see a warning, you must abide by it and take immediate action to remove
any potential threat of infection. It is also important to realize that this protection must be kept
up-to-date, as new viruses are created daily.
Personal Anti-Virus Software:
For those doctors and staff members who have computers that connect to the Internet while at home,
Avast Anti-Virus is available. From the Avast web-site
you may select the latest Home Edition software to download and use, Free of Charge.
This software is truly effective and easy to use. Furthermore, being free, it updates itself both
frequently and automatically. It provides great protection for your personal use.
One final comment...
Should you not be convinced and your policy not to have the Internet touch your Live Vetware System
still remains, I respect your wishes.
As the Internet is still truly effective for both information retrieval and for
Vetware system maintenance and upgrades, it would be very effective for you to have a single
stand-alone computer that is not on the network with your Vetware system.
This single computer, with its anti-virus software, can communicate with the Internet and provide you
with the web access that you require.
In order to smoothly and easily bring Vetware upgrades and fixes from the Internet through this
computer and transfer it into your network system, a Memory Key or Flash Drive is very useful.
Now you can easily copy information to the key, physically walk it to your network and
manually load the information, as instructed by us.
There's usually a good solution for every situation.
