Networking...

Now that I have all of these computers,
how do I make them talk together?

This is a question frequently asked by clinics both new and old.
Compu-Trust's policy is to keep everthing real simple.
We certainly believe in the K.I.S.S. theory.

Please note, for the purpose of this review, I will make 2 assumptions...
a) the Windows XP operating system is being used.
b) The work is being done by a hardware technician.

To start with, let's get some basic rules on paper.

  • Create the System Drive Location:
We set up the Vetware system on one common drive for the entire network. If at all possible, this drive, located on the server is given the drive letter M: for Main.
To accomplish this, we share the local drive C: on the server, using the share name of C.
We then use the same drive, by giving it the alias of M:.
Technically, this effectively maps... Net Use M: \\Main\C

  • Now all computers do the same mapping of M to Main's drive C
Using this logic, all computers, even the server see the same drive M: as the local drive C on the server. This is so important for consistency within the network.
Now drive M: is the same for everyone.

  • Now we install Vetware and set the Vetware location on all computers to drive M:. Automatically, all computers begin to look to the server, drive M:, one location for Vetware data.

  • Setting up the Main Printer
This concept could not be easier. As Vetware automatically prints all documents and reports to the default printer, we simply allocate the default printer on each computer to be the printer on which this computer should print.

  • Setting up the Label Printer Server
Usually there is only one label printer within your network. But again you have control with every computer. Simply install the label printer onto the computer that is to physically own the printer.
Rule: Vetware sends labels to the printer that has the word label in its name.
Now this computer must share the printer, please use the sharename Label

  • Setting up the Label Printer on Workstation
Using the DYMO LabelWriter is easy. Simply install the DYMO printer, on each workstation, directly over the network. XP will automatically give the printer the same name DYMO LabelWriter. And with such a name, Vetware will auto print labels to this printer.

  • Sounds easy...
Well, it really is for a hardware technician. Do remember, this document is being prepared for just that person. They will understand the above scenerio and have no problem fulfilling your requirements for Vetware. And if they do, always remember, they can Contact us, for more info, at any time.
As questions often arise, while the work is being performed, don't forget, we have extended support hours.
We can easily be reached by calling toll-free, 1 (877) 282-8845.
